Digital Transformation and API-first Strategy

Digital transformation is no longer just a buzz word. It’s directly impacting a company’s business. Customers are increasingly using digital touch points for interactions and a company without an effective digital strategy is surely to loose in this age.

If you are in the consulting business then you are no stranger to digital transformation as well as the related cloud-first or mobile-first or api-first strategy. So what is the right strategy for digital transformation ?

According to me, the foundation for digital transformation is the API (Application Programming Interfaces) because it’s the API that enables access to an organization’s assets and services. An API is the gateway to the enterprise. API-first strategy is key for the success of digital transformation. Cloud and Mobile are complementary strategies but without an API strategy I don’t see how digital transformation is going to happen!!

API enables new communication and distribution channels in this digital world. Take for example banks. Banks are exposing their in-house software via APIs to external developers and partners to enable them to develop their own applications. A very good case study is Mastercard’s anypresence, where Mastercard is making it’s services available as APIs to the larger ecosystem. The case study is available here¬†and is a good read.

Please share your experiences with api-first, mobile-first and cloud-first strategies in the comments section. Would like to understand different perspectives and client experiences.
